Back in October of 2020, Guardians received a message from a fellow Green Beret about a Nathan Ball. In that message, it was mentioned Nathan Ball the fake Green Beret made sure everybody in his neighborhood knew he was a big bad Green Beret Sniper. The GB that reached out to us said he did initial pings around the local SF community and found nobody who knew him, thus he reached out to us.
We looked at Nathan's social media footprint and really saw no mention of him claiming to be a Green Beret thus there wasn't much we could do. We then received an email from one of his neighbors that you can refer to in picture #2. That individual said they could get multiple neighbors to email us a statement that they've heard him claim to be a Green Beret.
And as it turns out...
Multiple emails from his neighbors (Pictures 2, 4, 6a,b, and c, 8a,b, and c, 10, 12, and 14) said he claimed on numerous occasions to have been in the 82nd Airborne Division and then Special Forces. One neighbor who is in the Spec Ops community heard some of his claims and knew right away he was blowing smoke up his neighbors Axxes. You can read his email in Picture #4.
At the bottom of the picture section, click on the red bar to see more.
So, we decided to start a file on Nathan Ball the fake Green Beret, and collect emails from other neighbors.
What are some of Nathan Ball's claims heard by friends and neighbors?
82nd Airborne Division, 100% false.
5th Special Forces Group on ODA 226, 100% false. He doesn't even know ODA numbering.
1991 Gulf War, 100% false.
Service in Iraq, 100% false.
Service in Afghanistan, 100% false.
Service in South America, 100% false.
Service in Central America, 100% false.
Got his first kill "Down South", 100% false.
Shrapnel and dirt still in his leg from an RPG blast, 100% false.
Taught firearms classes at Ft Carson, 100% false.
Still teaches neighbors "Combat shooting dills", 100% false. He might be teaching neighbors something but it's nothing he learned in combat or as a Green Beret. We would tread lightly in whatever he teaches under the guise of being a Green Beret that saw combat as this is a lie.
Shot a civilian and still gets hassled by police over that incident, 100% false.
Special Forces Sniper, 100% false.
Special Forces Warhead Diffusion Specialist, 100% false.
Once we decided there was enough proof from so many neighbors showing they indeed heard him make these claims, we ran him at the SF Schoolhouse and saw he NEVER attempted SFAS (Special Forces Assessment and Selection) much less SFQC (Special Forces Qualification Course)
With the Schoolhouse result in hand, we did a quick SCRA check and it only showed Coast Guard time from June '93-May '99
The SCRA result for the fake Green Beret Nathan Ball. He served 6 years in the Coast Guard.
When we initially called him, we were going on his SCRA result that only showed Coast Guard time. It didn't show any time in the Army, Army Reserves. Or the National Guard. At 2:36 of the phone call 👉Click here for the phone call👈 You hear him pretty much agree with the Coast Guard results yet he adds he was in the 19th SFG. This didn't show in his SCRA result so after the phone call we checked ATRRS (Army Training Requirements and Resources System) which shows any type of DOD training one would even attempt to register for going all the way back to 1984.
Low and behold we found a result for him:
ATRRS result showing he attended OSUT and the Basic Airborne Course, NOTHING MORE. Better detail in Pic #17
His ATRRS result showed he attended OSUT (One Station Unit Training), meaning Basic and AIT in 1990 and then it looks like he went straight to BAC (Basic Airborne Course) His MOS was 54B Chemical Operations Specialist, meaning he counted and kept inventory of protective masks.
It then shows he had an In Status for PLDC twice but was a no show both times. No other training whatsoever shows in ATRRS.
We sent a request to the National Guard, which is done at the state level, and tabled the case while we waited for records. Once we received his National Guard records we decided to post the article on our website as his Coast Guard records are irrelevant. We told him on the phone he was in the Coast Guard from 93-99 and he doesn't correct us, he only adds to what we said in stating he was in the 19th SFG(A). What we are primarily interested in is his National Guard records and we've received them... They confirmed what ATRRS showed earlier.
We can somewhat look into the mindset of the fake Green Beret Nathan Ball. Refer to his 2-1:
Here you see him as a 54B, NBC Clerk, Protective mask checker outer. NEVER a Green Beret.
We might note: You see 2 lines that are hand-lined Canceled through after he washed out the 1st time from SWTB. That means absolutely nothing whatsoever. It was a bad entry and you notice directly under it, you'll see the exact same date along with the correct data they meant to enter the first time.
Sooo, what can we deduce from this 2-1?
1) He was NEVER a Green Beret.
2) He wanted to be one of us.
3) Just because you want to be one of us, does not give you the right to pretend to be one of us.
Looking at the 2-1 of Nathan Ball the fake Green Beret:
He enters OSUT (Basic and AIT) and successfully becomes a 54B, Protective mask checker outer. During the time frame 90-93, there would be little demand for his MOS so he was probably an errand guy and coffee getter for the only two names he can recall from the 19th, one Major and one Master Sergeant.
He also completes the BAC (Basic Airborne Course) before reaching permanent party. Side note: Being Airborne qualified in a Special Forces unit does NOT make you a Green Beret.
So, he's at the 19th, getting coffee for about 3 months (April to July of '90) and someone decides to see if he has what it takes to even attempt to become a Green Beret. You see, he would have to complete this "Pre-Selection", to even attempt SFAS or "Selection", then he'd need to both pass selection and then get selected (not a guarantee) to make it to the Special Forces Qualification Course. Then he'd have to complete the SFQC to be able to call himself a Green Beret. He's as close to being a Green Beret as my Grandma is and she's been dead for 20 years.
In July of '90, they send him to SWTB. Let's look at SWTB:
The Special Warfare Training Branch (SWTB) designed and taught a course known as "Pre-SFT" (Which was later adopted by SWC for all SFAS candidates) to help those in the National Guard and Reserves prepare for Special Forces Assessment and Selection.
We can assume that Nathan Ball the fake Green Beret aspired to be one of us but for whatever reason didn't make the mark. Was he a VW (Voluntary Withdrawal) or was he dropped? We'd have to really dig deep to find that answer at the unit level itself and not worth the time. We do see he attempted "Pre-Selection" administered by SWTB from 7/11/90 until 9/26/90 yet he most assuredly wasn't there in training for 78 days. It's more likely it was his 2-week summer obligation and also his one weekend a month. In the grand scheme of things... Nada!!
This was a program to weed out dead weight before one would even attempt Special Forces Assessment and Selection. We know one of two things... He either tapped out and quit or was a weak link and was booted. Either way, not completing "Pre-Selection" gives no one the right to pretend to be a Green Beret Sniper years down the road.
After his failure at "Pre-Selection", he went back to his duty mos of 54B. About 1 year and 3 months later we see they tried to send him back to SWTB a second time but it looks like he didn't show up and was given a General Discharge (Different from Honorable).
We might note: You see 2 lines that are hand-lined Canceled through after he washed out the 1st time from SWTB. That means absolutely nothing whatsoever. It was a bad entry and you notice directly under it, you'll see the exact same date along with the correct data they meant to enter the first time.
That's it in a Nutshell. Just because you aspire to be a Green Beret and can't even make it to Selection, gives you know right to tell friend and family you're a Green Beret Sniper with kills from Central America to Afghanistan later in life.
Nathan Ball, you'll now be added to Guardiansofthegreenberet.com hall of Zeros forever.
